COVID-19: Now a pandemic of poor and willful ignorant Anti-vaxxers
Since the beginning, the COVID-19 pandemic affected different people differently. Expectedly the ones with poor health/preexisting conditions were hit hard but unexpectedly, yet sadly, people from lower socio-economical strata were affected even more severely. As if the poor health infrastructure was not enough COVID-19 and related lockdowns broke many economies to ruin. Let alone low-income African countries, once a poster child for economic growth-India is yet to pick up the pieces.
In a tour de force of scientific efforts, biomedical research delivered vaccines. These vaccines, like everything else in life, were not perfect but good enough to give a glimmer of hope to get this ravaging pandemic under control. But the good part of this salvation story ends here, rich countries overbooked as many as 5 doses per citizen outbidding poor countries leaving them with none Race for the third booster may spell death to thousands of unvaccinated poor of the world. | LinkedIn. Despite the luxury of 5 doses at their disposal, many ‘woke’ vaccine-hesitants never took a single shot! This willful ignorance of anti-vaxxers not only put themselves and their communities at risk but took away life-saving jabs from the needy but poor people. It is appalling and downright cruel that the likes of the UK and Germany discarded up to 100 Mn doses EU countries are throwing away expired vaccine doses — EURACTIV.com. Being poor is not the choice low-income country residents made but the western government hoarding vaccines for the ignorant anti-vaxxer is an unjustifiable choice and crime against humanity.
Unequal distribution of vaccine: A playground for mutation and deadlier variants
Complex regional and socioeconomically issues and in part vaccine hoarding resulted in gravely unequal distribution of vaccines. As can be seen in the infographics below, the majority of Africa, part of Asia, and eastern Europe are nowhere closer to vaccinating their population sufficiently.
